Moisture
The Charleston problemAsk anyone who's cracked a drain valve here in August. It doesn't hiss. It pours.
Compressing air concentrates whatever water is in it, and Charleston air carries more water than most of the country. Summer dew points sit in the low to mid 70s°F for weeks at a time. Operating cost gap is real: refrigerated units draw roughly 0.5 to 0.8 kW per 100 CFM, heatless desiccant runs near 3 kW once purge losses count. Buy desiccant for the dew point, not as an upgrade.
Dryers are rated at "100/100/100": 100 PSIG, 100°F inlet, 100°F ambient. A Lowcountry compressor room runs past both temperatures by July, and every degree over the rating cuts real drying capacity, so a dryer sized exactly to your compressor's output will pass water at the worst possible time. Size the dryer at least 25% over compressor output. High-inlet-temperature models built for hot rooms are the other route: they cost more and they earn it here. Within a couple miles of salt water, outdoor condenser coils, drain valves, and fasteners corrode years ahead of schedule. Boatyards on Shem Creek and the Wando already know this. Spec coated coils on outdoor dryers, stainless drains where you can, and put the machine indoors if there's any way to give it airflow.
PVC pipe is not rated for compressed air and fails by shattering, not leaking. OSHA cites it. Black iron and copper work, aluminum modular piping is the best value going in new installs, and galvanized sheds scale into your tools. If your shop runs on standby power, remember that an across-the-line compressor motor pulls 3 to 6 times running load at start. Rough rule: standby generator kW ≈ compressor HP × 2 to start reliably.
